My name is Mrs. Arico and I am so excited to be your child's teacher! This year we will travel on many exciting learning adventures together! Our classroom theme is "Jungle Fun in the First Grade." I am counting on each and every one of you to bring an explorer's mind to school, ready to learn and discover new things.
Like any good explorer, you should spend some time getting ready for your new journey.
This summer, I would like you to practice your letters and sounds, sight words, basic math facts, and always remember to read something everyday! It can be a picture book, a magazine, a story, or even a poem. Ask your family to read to you each day too!
I can't wait for the new school year to begin. It is an exciting year! I'd like to welcome those that are new to our school and a warm "welcome back" to our returning students, as you will be the "experts" of the school!

First grade is an exciting year! We will be doing so many fun projects. One way to get off to a good start is to bring all of your supplies to school! You are welcome to bring them with you when you visit at our Open House!
Don't forget to label each item with your name!

One bottle of Elmer's White Liquid Glue

2 large pink erasers

Families of Mrs. Arico's First Graders
Congratulations! You are the parent/guardian of a first grader at West Haverstraw Elementary School! You will be amazed at how much your child will grow this year! Most likely, your child has had the seeds of reading and writing planted, and during first grade, those seeds will grow and blossom, making your child more of an accomplished reader and writer! It truly is a year of tremendous growth!
You will see changes in your child's thinking, as he/she becomes familiar with abstract concepts and symbols. The change will be dramatic-- just compare a tiny seed with a full-grown sunflower. That's the kind of growth we are aiming for this year in first grade!
Observable growth occurs consistently when you and I work together. I am encouraging you to read daily with your child and to assist them when they need help. You can write a small note on their homework letting me know they had trouble completing it independently or if it was easy for them.
